| From 20 to 24,September,2018,the 17th Western China International Fair(WCIF)was held in Chengdu.Delegations from 90 countries and regions attended the fair.During the event,numerous forums were held.Sichuan Provincial Commission of Tourism Development and the Delegation of Uganda held a forum to discuss issues concerning exchanges and cooperation in tourism,agriculture between the two sides on the afternoon of 20,September.The author was invited to perform interpreting for the forum.This paper,with focus on the author’s interpreting service for the forum,under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory,makes a comprehensive review and analysis of his interpreting performance,in hope of“learning from experience”so as to further strengthen himself both theoretically and practically.The analysis of interpreting performance focuses on the inappropriate renderings with“updated versions”provided.The author also expects that the exploration will be of some value to interpreting theoretical research and practice in general.During the forum,the author had all his interpreting recorded,and the recordings serve as reliable and helpful materials for this research.The paper consists of four chapters besides preface and conclusion.Chapter 1Task Description gives a brief account of WCIF and the forum,as well as the requirements on interpreting.In Chapter 2,the author mainly introduces the preparations he made before the interpreting,including term collection,background information acquiring,theoretical preparation and interpreting tools preparation,to make himself fully equipped for the task.In spite of the careful preparations,the author still ran into different kinds of difficulties in the interpreting process.According to Interpretive Theory,what an interpreter should convey is not the words or sentences of the language,but the senses expressed by the language,such as facts,contexts,ideas and feelings,in order to achieve communicative purpose.With this in mind,in Chapter3,the author will analyze the wrong or inappropriate renderings in the practice in the form of case analysis,with updated versions to show how the sense is better conveyed in the target language through the application of proper techniques.While in Chapter 4,the author first makes an assessment of his interpreting performance through feedbacks from the client,colleagues and his own evaluation,and then presents his reflections on his shortcomings exposed in the practice,with suggestions followed.This interpreting task is quite difficult to the author due to his limits in capability,experience and knowledge.Though he has done his job quite satisfactorily as a result of his careful preparations and sincerity,his flaws and shortcomings were exposed in the process.The writing of this thesis not only helps the author to examine himself thoroughly of his performance,both good aspect and poor aspect,in the interpreting,but also to gain a better understanding of the Interpretive Theory.The author hopes his self-examination will not only help himself improve his own competence in interpreting,but also be of some value to interpreting workers and learners. |
