A Report On Interpreting For The 6^th Chengdu International Tourism Expo

With the continuous development of tourism industry,multinational tourism cooperation have increased frequently.Large-scale professional tourism exhibitions provide communication platforms for tourism buyers and sellers around the world and Chengdu International Tourism Expo is one of them.From November 29^thto December 1^st,2018,the 6^thChengdu International Tourism Expo attracts about 500exhibitors worldwide with the theme of China-Europe Tourism Cooperation.The author,as an interpreter,serves for exhibitors of travel agency in France and Turkey,and is responsible for providing consecutive interpreting services for their exchanges with representatives of Chinese travel agencies.Based on this interpretation this report tries to explore how interpreters can effectively complete interpretation tasks in business communication when clients are non-native English speakers with strong accents.Analyzed from the recording transcripts,obstacles to this interpretation include unfamiliarity with proper nouns and memory overload after long-time interpretation in addition to accent barriers.The following strategies are applied in interpreting to address those problems:firstly,amplification and explanation are adopted to interpret unfamiliar proper nouns;secondly,enquiry is used to clarify misunderstandings caused by accents barriers and anticipation of similar contents in later rounds of talks are made to reduce workload.Thirdly,effort is properly distributed in the later stage of interpretation when memory is overloaded,with a stress on main contents and new information.According the summary of the interpretation,the following conclusions are made:Interpreters should rationally distribute their efforts among the listening and analyzing process,the understanding and memorizing process and the target-language producing process,as well as among the early,middle and late stages of business meetings,so as to convey the main message and thereby deliver satisfactory interpretation.This formal consecutive interpreting is a real treasure for the interpreter in her graduate life.Through the analysis of the whole interpretation,she summarizes her experiences and lessons,and hopes to offer a reference to those who will encounter the same situation in the future.
