A Report On English-Chinese Subtitle Translation Of The Durrells(Second Season)

Films and television plays have become an indispensable entertainment for the public,and more and more people have a strong interest in foreign films.As a bridge of cross-cultural communication,subtitle translation plays an important role.The quality of subtitle translation affects not only the viewing experience of the target audience but also the transmission of cultural information.Therefore,how to improve the quality of subtitle translation has become an important topic for subtitle researchers.This report is a translation practice report,which selects the translated subtitle translation content as the research material.When translating this translation task,the author has taken Skopos theory with its three rules namely skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,as the theoretical guidance,and then the author has used different translation methods to convey film information to the audience in different cultural backgrounds,so as to provide the audience a good film and increase their understanding of foreign culture information across language and cultural barriers.In this report,first,the author has introduced the translation task and requirements,as well as the relevant preparations before translation.Second,the author has analyzed and explored the translation difficulties caused by the limitation of time and space and the cultural differences between China and England in the process of translation.Besides,the author has given examples using some translation methods and techniques to solve these difficulties,such as addition,omission,shift and liberal translation.Finally,this report has also introduced the feedback and suggestions from the client on the translation task,and the author’s reflections and the harvest during the translation process.
