With the chemical industry development in China, the economic cooperation among countries has become increasingly closer. As an important branch of the chemical industry, the production of ammonium nitrate plays an increasingly important role in industrial development. Therefore, the demand for the translation of related documents, such as chemical production technology, safety instructions, and operation manuals, among multinational companies has also increased sharply. This thesis is a report on the Chinese-English translation of the ammonium nitrate production project of the Sedin Engineering company, which aims to help foreign customers better understand China’s chemical production technology. The source text involves production technology, safety instructions, and instrument operation. The author summarizes the translation difficulties encountered in the translation process. It could be divided into the following three aspects: 1)the complexity of lexical relations in the Chinese four-character structures;2)the uncertainty of non-subject sentences translation and the obscurity of attributive clauses;3)the enhancement of discourse cohesion. As the technical text, its purpose is to convey the scientific and technological information. Therefore, the author translated this project under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory.Accordingly, some translation solutions are proposed based on the above difficulties.Firstly, the literal translation can be adopted to achieve the lexical equivalence after figuring out the lexical relations.Secondly, conversion can be adopted to solve the absence of a subject in the non-subject sentences by changing the sentence voice or sentence structure.Thirdly, division and reconstruction can be adopted to recombine long attributive clauses. Finally, addition can be adopted to enhance textual cohesion because the addition of subjects and conjunctions could make the textual more logical. This report aims to clearly demonstrate the content of the source text and faithfully convey the original meaning.Accordingly, the translation should be accurate in order to achieve the equivalence of words, sentences, and discourse. The author summarizes the translation experience of chemical texts and attempts topropose the corresponding translation methods and techniques.Furthermore, the author hopes that this report could be a reference for further research in this field as well.
