Research On Function Of Couplets In Vernacular Novels During Ming And Qing Dynasties

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties,the vernacular novels were very wonderful.At the same time,the couplets,which were compatible with both refined and vulgar tastes,also ushered in a flourishing period.The couplet became one of many styles in the vernacular novels of Ming and Qing Dynasties.The couplets provide new ideas for shaping characters,developing plots,decorating the environment and making the world a better place.This paper takes the antithetical couplets in the vernacular novels of Ming and Qing Dynasties as the research object,which is divided into three parts: introduction,text and conclusion.Among them,the introduction mainly explains the research value and significance of the subject,the research status quo,innovation points.At present,there are few research results on the function of antithetical couplets in novels,which can be divided into two aspects: on the one hand,the influence of the symmetrical structure of antithetical couplets on the reading and plot structure of novels.On the other hand,it discusses the role of couplet characters,narration and scenery.It lays the basic direction of the subject research,but there is still a large space for discussion.The body part is mainly divided into six parts:First,define the definition of the couplet,discuss the development of the couplet and its use in the novel.Secondly,the four stages of couplet germination,development,maturity and prosperity are sorted out.According to statistics,couplets were first used in novels in the Song Dynasty.The writing tradition of combining rhymes and prose and the maturity of writing art promoted the prosperity of couplet narration in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Second,couplets play a rich role in shaping novel characters.Couplets can lead to the appearance of characters.The flexibility of the couplet provides the characters with an opportunity to show their talents.The couplets in the characters’ places of residence have the function of expressing the characters’ aspirations and personalities.Thirdly,it discusses the function of couplets to assist the plot development of novels.The couplet has the narrative function of prenarration,summary,linking the plot and serving as a clue.This kind of function is most prominent in case novels.The couplet is the key clue to solve the case and plays an important role in the structure of the whole text.Fourth,the couplet describes the atmosphere and environment for the occurrence and development of the plot.The lively and interesting couplets in street life close the distance between novels and reality.The couplets in the temple depict the tranquil atmosphere of the novel.The couplets of folk festivals have the function of setting off the atmosphere.Couplets enhance the aesthetic value of the novel in detail description.Fifthly,couplets embedded in novels play the role of social harmony.On the one hand,the couplet satirizes the darkness of society and exposes irrational phenomena.On the other hand,the couplets posted in special places express the moral ideas of suppressing evil and promoting good.Satire and exhortation work together to make society better.Sixth,discuss the shortcomings of the use of couplets in the novel.One is the repeated use of couplets;the other is the repeated imitation of couplets in novels.Neither of the two types of repetition is conducive to the improvement of novel innovation.The epilogue summarizes the whole text.Although the use of antithetical couplets in novels has some shortcomings,they can not hide the advantages,and the various roles played by antithetical couplets in novels can not be ignored.
