Song Ne served the emperors both in the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, and became the head teacher of the Imperial Academy in the Ming Dynasty. As a literati who lived in the period between two dynasties, his works were full of characteristics. This paper combines the historical and cultural background of the Yuan Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty and social thoughts, sorts out Song Ne’s life track, summarizes his Neo-Confucianism and literary thoughts, analyzes the changes in his mindset and works, and discusses the characteristics of his poems and articles. The first chapter focuses on the textual research of Song Ne’s family history, contacts and works.Song Ne lived in the period between Yuan and Ming Dynasties, which was a period of wars.He had rich political experiences, because he went through the officialdom in the late Yuan Dynasty, lived in seclusion and assumed an official again in the early Ming Dynasty. Therefore, this chapter divides Song Ne’s life into two parts with the boundary of the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, combs Song Ne’s life, and textualizes his contacts.Judging from the historical records and poems he writen,Song Ne had few contacts, except for his close friends Huo Yuanfang and Zhao Yuanchang,he only contacted with his classmates of the Imperial Academy, surrounding officials, and official colleagues sporadically. In addition, this chapter examines Song Ne’s works, and considers that his works includes Xiyin Manuscript and Moral Character Record. The second chapter mainly discusses Song Ne’s Neo-Confucianism.Song Ne’s Neo-Confucianism is very rich, and it is demonstrated through the poems and articles included in Xiyin Manuscript.Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism became an official thought since the Yuan Dynasty.Song Ne,who received official education, inherited and enriched the thoughts of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism,and put forward his own opinions in four aspects: Philosophy and qi,loyalty and filial piety,self-cultivation,and education.Among them,Song Ne’s discussion of loyalty and filial piety and the thought of advocating school education have distinctive characteristics of the times. The exploration of Song Ne’s Neo-Confucianism can not only improve Song Ne’s image, but also help analyze the formation of his literary thoughts. The third chapter mainly discusses Song Ne’s literary thoughts.Affected by Neo-Confucianism and social thoughts,Song Ne’s literary thoughts follow the tradition of pragmatism. He believed that articles should shoulder the responsibility of spreading Confucianism and Taoism, and advocating the unity of literature and Tao.But at the same time, they should not ignore the literary color;poetry creation should follow the three requirements of expressing ambition, telling the truth, and learning from the ancient. What needs to be pointed out is that among the writers of the Tang Dynasty,Song Ne admired Du Fu the most. The reason for this is related to Song Ne’s idea of "viewing the world by sound" and following creative rules and Du Fu’s personality charm. The fourth chapter mainly discusses the changes on Song Ne’s mindset and creative expressions.Living during the two dynasties, his mindset was more abundant than that of other eras.During the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, the literates faced the political pressures after undergoing the change of dynasties.Recluse or officialdom was a long-lasting and insoluble puzzle in their minds.Song Ne spent his life in two dynasties,so his mindset changed with the change of the regime. This chapter summarizes his mindset into officialdom frustration, feeling sad for the past, confusing be an official or not,and achieving his political dreams into four life stages during the Yuan period, the period when he was an examiner in Beiping in the early Ming period, the period when he lived in Huaxian county, and after he became the assistant teacher of the Imperial Academy. The fifth chapter mainly discusses the characteristics of Song Ne’s works. The characteristics of Song Ne’s works are revealed through his existing 184 poems and articles. His creations showed the coexistence of nature and court due to the change of his identity, and showed the style of elegance and honesty due to the influence of Neo-Confucianism and Taoism. In addition, rich images, allusions, and color words also made his works colorful.
