A Report On Simulated Interpreting At The Chinese And Foreign Press Conference After The 2016 China's Two Sessions

Since its reform and opening-up to the outside world,China's politics,economy and culture have developed rapidly.In order to improve China's image in the world and strengthen the political,economic and cultural exchanges with other countries,Chinese government has hosted the Chinese and Foreign Press Conference after China's Two Sessions(Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress)since 1991,Its main task is to answer questions posed by Chinese and foreign journalists about the tasks to be completed by the Chinese government in the next year,diplomatic goals and the international situation.Meanwhile,at the Chinese and Foreign Press Conference each year,the wonderful speech of Chinese Premier and the excellent interpretation of his interpreter always arouse worldwide concerns and are studied by many scholars.Currently,research on Chinese and Foreign Press Conference is limited and always starts from aspects of skopos theory,interpretive theory and cultural translation,lacking of creation.This thesis chooses the theory of linguistic adaptation developed by Verschueren in 1978 as the guiding theory and the Chinese and Foreign Press Conference after the 2016 China's Two Sessions as the material of simulated interpretation,explores how to make choice and adapts to the context,and conveys the content of the source language precisely to the audience of the target language.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the research background,purpose and significance,problems and methods,the layout of thesis.The second chapter describes the research status of government press conference interpretation in China,the basic concept of Verschueren's linguistic adaptation and its function on the process of interpretation.The third chapter introduces the task of this simulated interpreting firstly;then it explores how to make preparation before interpreting in accordance with the linguistic context and communicative context(e.g.summarizing characteristics of Chinese and Foreign Press Conference after China's Two Sessions and accumulating key words);finally it analyzes problems when interpreting with examples,such as technical terms,four-characters idioms and proverbs.The fourth chapter makes analysis of detailed examples in the simulated interpreting at the Chinese and Foreign Press Conference after the 2016 China's Two Sessions under the guidance of the theory of linguistic adaptation.The fifth chapter is a conclusion in which the theory of linguistic adaptation is believed to be able to guide the interpretation at the Chinese and Foreign Press Conference after China's Two Sessions.Problems and difficulties in the process of interpretation are discussed and suggestions for improvement are also made in this chapter.It has been found that the theory of linguistic adaptation enables interpreters to consider the cognitive habits of Chinese and foreign journalists and make choice and adaptation from different angles of pragmatic investigation-contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptability.Due to the limitation of time and cognition,the analysis of this thesis still has some problems.It is hoped that the theory of linguistic adaptation can be studied further so as to explore more interpretation strategies at the Chinese and Foreign Press Conference after China's Two Sessions in the future.
