Study On The Arts Of Stone Statues In Pilu Cave Of Anyue County And Design A Pop-up Book

Pilu Cave in Anyue County,Sichuan Province was excavated in the late Tang Dynasty and early Song Dynasty.It was one of the best examples of stone statues art at its peak in the Song Dynasty.There are five relatively complete niches in the cave: The Grotto of the Liuben Zun,The Residence Grotto,The Guanyin Hall,The Thousand Buddha Grotto and The Jade Emperor Grotto.Among them,the stone sculpture of the Guanyin Hall is the most exquisite.Pilu Cave has completely preserved the stone statues of Liu Benzun,the fifth generation of the Sichuan Mizong,who became a Buddha as a monk.It has unique local characteristics,and studying on these statues is conducive to dig the local culture of Sichuan.From the perspective of art design,this paper studies the arts of stone statues in the Pilu Cave and takes three of them,which are relatively intact,rich in content and exquisite in carving skills,as the design objects,to carry out the three-dimensional book design practice.This paper has three parts.First,combing and analysing the relevant literature and field research to investigate and verify the layout and theme of these niches.The conclusion is that the statues in Pilu Cave have important cultural values,arts values,historical values and social values.This work gives an accurate reference for pop-up book designing.Then,using the method of image,study the headdress,clothing and form of the figures which were combed and analyzed according to different identities,and the plant patterns,animal patterns and other decorative patterns in Pilu Cave,and figure out that the style of Pilu Cave statues was exquisite and realistic,and the superb carving skills made them good at using lines to depict.It is concluded that there are three characteristics of Pilu Cave: first,the stone carvings have the grandeur of Tang Dynasty’s and the delicacy of Song Dynasty’s;Second,it breaks through religious rituals and pays attention to the expression of human nature of the Buddha;Third,the theme and form of stone statues in Pilu Cave are highly secularized.Finally,on the premise of retaining the characteristics of Pilu Cave,the visual image drawing and pop-up book design practice are carried out.The design practice of this pop-up book with the theme of Pilu Cave Stone Statues.This study is the author’s exploration of finding a new form of inheritance and protection of grottoes culture,which can increase the publicity of Anyue Grottoes and provide some reference directions for grottoes elements’ designing and applying.
