Against the backdrop of the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up,how to translate outstanding children’s literature with local characteristics is still the issue of critical concern based on the new era philosophy of "Telling Chinese Stories Well".In this thesis, the translator excerpts the first chapter of Red Tiles to do a research. It is a splendid juvenile novel written by Cao Wenxuan,a distinguished Chinese writer of children’s literature, which is educational and illuminating with great characterization and significance. The "Truth-Seeking-Utility-Attaining" Continuum Model of Evaluation under the theory of Translator Behavior Criticism is applied as the major theoretical instruction to translate this children’s literary work.In the translation practice, the translator also takes three parameters of accuracy, readability and children’s literariness as evaluation criteria to evaluate the translation of Red Tiles,in order to solve lexical and special sentential problems, containing culture-loaded word, reduplication, onomatopoeia and rhetorical sentence. It is concluded that the translation purpose of truth-seeking can greatly preserve the content and form of source text, mainly adopting the foreignization strategy in terms of culture-loaded words, onomatopoeia and rhetorical sentences;while the translation with the aim of utility-attaining conforms to reading habits of foreign readers, usually using the domestication strategy in regard of modal particle and reduplication. Finally, the translation quality of children’s literature can be evaluated comprehensively in accordance with evaluation parameters of accuracy, readability and children’s literariness. There are five chapters in this report. The first chapter consists of task background, the author and source text, task significance and reporting framework. The translation procedure is described at full length in the second chapter. The third chapter elucidates the theoretical framework, generalizing the Translator Behavior Criticism and its relevant model as well as evaluation parameters. In the fourth chapter, concrete examples are analyzed to explore pertinent strategies in lexical and rhetorical aspects under the guidance of the theory. Finally, some significant findings and feasible suggestions are summarized for further research in this field.
