| The Report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China(NCCPC)is an important CPC document that consists of a review of the Party’s work over the past five years and plans for future development. The 19th report allows the international community to learn about China from an accurate and comprehensive perspective and explains policies and measures to the outside world.Hence,it is an important window into China for the rest of the world.Using Martin’s Appraisal Theory, this thesis studies appraisal resources in the Chinese and English versions of the report.Firstly, the distribution and percentages of appraisal resources in both versions is analyzed using annotation, and the function of the three appraisal systems is discussed and individual examples are analyzed.Secondly, the similarities and differences of appraisal resources between the two versions are observed through data analysis, and translation strategies for appraisal resources are explored according to Newmark’s theory on translation. In this thesis, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis are used to study appraisal resources.Specifically, quantitative analysis is used to investigate the distribution of appraisal resources in the two texts, and qualitative analysis is used to find out potential reasons behind the distribution.Through analysis,it is concluded that the Chinese and English versions of the report of 19th National Congress of Communist Party of China contain a large number of appraisal resources, including attitude resources, engagement resources and gradation resources.Among them, attitude resources account for the largest share, meaning that the report conveys a large number of attitudes and views.Meanwhile, positive resources are more common than negative ones, showing that the basic tone of the report is positive, and China’s development is promising and its people are full of confidence. In terms of translation strategies, the report adopts both semantic and communicative translation, meaning that it not only respects the original content, but also helps target readers understand.Hence,it is worth learning from the report.By analyzing the appraisal resources in the 19th report, the thesis allows for a deeper understanding of it,contributes to the landscape of political discourse translation. It also investigates translation strategies of appraisal resources, which will be helpful to future translators. |
