| Prose,as one of the four major literary genres,has the characteristics of "shape dispersing but spirit concentrating",profound artistic conception,and beautiful language.The English translation of Shaanxi regional prose,after being recreated by translators,not only shows the artistic essence of Shaanxi literature to readers around the world,but also possesses modernity and universality in the Chinese context.Selected Prose of Jia Pingwa(Chinese-English)is the first work of C-E Translation of Contemporary Masterpiece Series,which is translated by Professor Hu Zongfeng and Dr.Robin.As an excellent work that conveys the historical culture of Shaanxi and the spirit of Shaanxi people,this book diversifies the forms and carriers of Shaanxi stories going global.This study selected 735 pairs of corpus from 27 essays in Selected Prose of Jia Pingwa.The author collected data manually in accordance with the five equivalent norms in Koller’s equivalence theory.The author takes qualitative analysis as essential approach and supplement quantitative analysis as well as case analysis methods to conduct research from five aspects.From the perspective of denotative equivalence,it studies the strategies and methods of English translation of vocabulary that conform to material culture,ecological culture,social culture,religious culture,and language culture.In terms of connotative equivalence,the thesis studies the strategies and methods of word translation involving connotations on speech level,connotations of socially determined usage,connotations of stylistic effect,connotations of register,and connotations of evaluation.The thesis studies the explicit cohesion and implicit coherence of the text from the perspective of text-normative equivalence.This thesis classifies and studies the sentences that realize the three pragmatic functions of dialects from the perspective of pragmatic equivalence.This thesis analyzes and studies the sentences that realize phonetic rhetorical devices,lexical rhetorical devices,and syntactical rhetorical devices from the perspective of formal equivalence.Based on the in-depth research from the above multiple perspectives,this thesis discusses how the translator realizes the five equivalence relations in Koller’s equivalence theory when translating.Research results found that Koller’s equivalence theory can effectively direct translation practice.These five diversified equivalent specifications basically cover all the content in the translation process.The translator adopts domestication as the major translation strategy and foreignization as the supplement in the Selected Prose of Jia Pingwa.In addition,some translation methods are also used by translators,such as literal translation,free translation,substitution and interpretation,etc.The translation not only faithfully represents the original content,but also reproduces the original text’s artistic conception and beauty.By applying Koller’s equivalence theory to the study of English translation of regional literature,the readability and appreciation of the original text will be enhanced,and the regional culture will be better disseminated.In general,this thesis discusses the English translation of regional prose from a new perspective,which has high practical research value for regional literary translation. |
