Translator Behavior Criticism is a translation theory proposed by Chinese scholar Zhou Lingshun,in which “utility-attaining” and “extra-utility-attaining” are two important concepts.“Utility-attaining”refers to the attitude and methods adopted by the translator to meet the needs of pragmatism on the basis of seeking truth in all or part of the meaning carried by the source text;“extra-utility-attaining” refers to the intentional adaptation of a translation under the influence of external factors.By observing the translator’s “utility-attaining” and “extra-utility-attaining” behaviors,it can be seen how the translator is influenced by various factors during the translation.Through the comparative analysis of the source text and the target text,and in combination with Translator Behavior Criticism,it is found that the “utility-attaining”behaviors in the translation include adjusting the order of the sentences and adapting culture-loaded words.The “extra-utility-attaining” behaviors are reflected in the deletion of the direct description of women’s bodies,adding content about the background of the characters and adding descriptions of the environment.In the meanwhile,the study also found that the “utility-attaining” and“extra-utility-attaining” behaviors of the two translators are influenced by two types of factors-individual factors and social factors.From the perspective of individual factors,the excellent bilingual competence of the translators has brought the novel to a new stage at the literary level,and the attitudes of the two translators towards translation have prompted them to adopt more domestication strategies.From the perspective of social factors,influenced by patronage,ideology,poetics,and the readers’ requirements,the translators have modified,deleted,and adjusted the original text to a certain extent,which makes the translation full of characteristics,and well-accepted by the target readers.This research can not only help us understand how the translator’s behavior is influenced by various factors but also provide some reference for the “going out” of Chinese literary works. |
