Abstract/Summary:
English and Chinese have their own distinct expressions due to their respective characteristics. The form of long sentence is widely used in English, while that of short sentence is always taken instead of in Chinese. Some long sentences usually need to be properly handled in the process of translation for guaranteeing the quality of translation. Then, some long English sentences in the fourth chapter of The Sociology of Food and Agriculture are taken as the research object based on the practice of English-Chinese translation, meanwhile, selecting Hans Vermeer’s Skopos theory as the theoretical perspective and exploring the specific translation strategies of long sentences in E-C translation by its guidance. The first part of this paper briefly introduces the background and literature of the translation practice text. The second part is an overview of Skopos theory, and the third part mainly discusses in three aspects-content(extended meaning and language style),grammar(subordinate structure and coordinate structure)and form(the processing of the dash and bracket),to study methods of long sentences translation in E-C by analyzing of specific examples based on three basic principles of Skopos theory. From the perspective of content, when translating long English sentences into Chinese,we should use appropriate diction according to the context, and for grammar,to figure out the logical relation by choosing proper translation methods, while for the form, punctuation in the translation should be handled by the habit of the target language.
