Property and Politics in Sabah is a historical book describing the land problem and political process in Sabah,Malaysia. The translation of it from English into Chinese intends to improve the international awareness of East Malaysia, enhance international friendship, strengthen the mutual understanding between the two nations, and provides cultural support for the growing demand for international cooperation between China and Malaysia. This report focuses on the Chinese translation problems encountered in the process of translating the second chapter of the book and proposes solutions under the guidance of the Skopos theory. This report mainly contains task description, process description, theoretical guidance and case analysis.Task description expounds on the background, significance, requirements of the task and also the source text in the task.Process description consists of pre-translation preparation,during-translation process and post-translation management.Theoretical guidance introduces the three rules in Skopos theory,i.e.skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, and their guidance to the translation of historical texts. In the section of case analysis, translation techniques such as amplification, conversion, reformation and omission, etc.are discussed with selected cases from the translator’s real practice respectively from the perspective of the three rules of the Skopos theory. It is found in the report that the translation of historical text can be viewed as a multiple interaction between the author, the source text, the translator, the target text and also the target readers, with its focuses on an accurate transmission of original messages and target readers’acceptance of the translation, thus it can be guided by the three rules of the Skopos theory with emphasis on how to realize its communication function, for which the translator should adopt some translation skills or methods to achieve a faithful, accurate, coherent and fluent translation, transmitting the historical message in the source text to the target readers to the full.
