Abstract/Summary:
As a significant medium of presenting historical material, documenting historical events, and delivering historical information, historical texts featuring formality, authenticity, and accuracy as those of non-fiction literature works.Translating historical texts from English to Chinese is undoubtedly beneficial for facilitating Chinese readers‘ in-depth understanding of historical facts, translators‘ discussing specific translation problems encountered during such a process, and promoting historic and cultural exchange between western and eastern academic communities. The source text of this translation research report is retrieved from the book titled with First to Fight—The Polish War 1939 and published in September,2019,commemorating the 80 th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II.This book provides a comprehensive record of the Polish War in 1939 and how it contributed to the evolution of World War Two,lending itself great historical value.Centering on the skopos, coherence and fidelity rules,Skopos Theory stands out as an essential theory of the German Functionalist School. This translation research report explores the practical application of Skopos Theory in the E-C translation of historical text aiming at deciding on the most appropriate translation methods and techniques so that the efficiency and quality of the translation report will be ensured. In general, the linguistic features of the source text can be analyzed from its lexical, syntactic and discourse levels.Lexically, the usage of proper nouns, terminologies, and culture-loaded words is prevalent;syntactically, there are ample passive sentences, sentences without subjects,compound-complex sentences;at the discourse level, the strict structures between sentences, the fluent discourse structure and the discourse patterns combined with description and narration are outstanding.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the author adopts reconstruction of sentence order, conversion of the passive voice, and repetition of the substitute to address translation problems at syntactical and discourse levels to achieve coherence;uses literal translation and transliteration to handle translation difficulties at a lexical level such as proper nouns, terminologies, and culture-loaded words to meet the fidelity rule. The realization of coherence and fidelity of the transaltum is based on and governed by the purposes of the source and target texts.Under the theoretical framework of Skopos Theory, this translation research report not only analyzes the writing purpose, linguistic features, and stylistic features of the source text but also addresses each translation problem in line with skopos, coherence and fidelity rules so as to provide a theoretical and practical perspective in the field of E-C translation of historical text, therefore presenting historical facts to domestic readers and contributing to historical and cultural exchange between China and the West.
