On Explicitation Strategies In Artificial Intelligence Popular Science Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Nowadays,artificial intelligence technology has attracted great attention around the world.Popular science translation on artificial intelligence is conducive to the study and exploration of this cutting-edge technology.“AI Discovery”,an official WeChat account that aims to create a platform for young people’s artificial intelligence learning and development,was first established in 2017 by the scholars’ team of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.The translator joined the translation studio of “AI Discovery” in May 2019.This report is based on three popular science articles on artificial intelligence translated by the translator,which aims to explore the application of explicitation strategies in artificial intelligence popular science translation under the guidance of Skopos theory.Three articles selected as research materials introduce the combination and specific application of artificial intelligence and tourism,as well as the popular language for the development of artificial intelligence.The content is closely related to life and have practical significance in disseminating artificial intelligence technologies.Although popular science articles pursue concise expression,the application of explicitation strategies is of great significance to increase the readability of translation.This report analyzes the artificial intelligence popular science translation from lexical,sentence and textual level.At the lexical level,three translation techniques are summed up: explicitation of tense,pronoun and implicit expressions.At the sentence level,amplification and structural explicitation are two main methods.At the textual level,explicitation is achieved by adding cohesive words or sentences.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the application of explicitation strategies in artificial intelligence popular science articles plays an important role in helping readers understand the articles and improving reading experience.While pursuing the accurate transmission of the source text,translating with simple and concise words is essential in popular science translation.Therefore,translators should avoid over-explicitation which results in the redundancy of translation.Besides,due to the limited contents of the research materials,the six strategies proposed in this report whether can be used in various popular science translation needs further research and exploration.
