Scripted speeches, characterized by high information density, formal written-style language and unnatural pauses, pose challenges to consecutive interpreters by increasing their cognitive load and raising the difficulty of deverbalization. However, compression strategies such as omission, deletion, summarization, reorganization and paraphrasis,if properly applied, can effectively tackle those challenges. This thesis,by referring to previous studies, first defines scripted speeches, summarizes their main features, and points out the necessity of employing compression strategics. The thesis then conducts a case study on a meeting between the 2019 Seminar on Economic,Fiscal and Monetary Policies for Venezuela and Yunnan Provincial Department of Finance and evaluates the interpreter’s performance in applying compression strategies to Chincsc-Spanish consecutive interpreting.Examples in which compression strategies are applied both properly or improperly are singled out for discussion. The main causes of improper compression include misjudgment of major and minor message;lack of extra-textual knowledge,non-sensitivity to key textual signals and lack of language flexibility;over-attention to certain words and numbers;improper use of shorthand symbols.By reviewing the performance of the interpreter, the thesis concludes that proper compression relieves the interpreter’s cognitive load and improves the accuracy of interpreting, while improper compression makes the logic vague and leads to errors.Lastly, the thesis provides four suggestions on the better application of compression,including:1)contextualize the message and comprehend the major logical structure;2)familiarize with in-textual and extra-textual information and properly simplify themessage;3)balance cognitive effort for listening and note-taking;4)make shorthand symbols more distinctive to improve the accuracy of interpreting.
