This English-Chinese translation report is based on the first two chapters of the book Dreamers and Designers:The Shaping of West Vancouver written by the Canadian historian Francis Mansbridge. This book tells the history of the city West Vancouver,Canada. It mainly expounds how settlers created a harmonious community between man and nature, and how land reform and social change affected bildings and planning of community in West Vancouver. It describes the city from various aspects with concise and rigorous language.Chinese urban planners may draw experience from this book. This report illustrates the translation difficulties and relevant methods and techniques. It first outlines the background, introduction and significance of the source text.Second,it introduces pre-translation preparation, difficulties in translation and post-translation review.Third,it specially analyzes and tackles the difficulties that the translator encountered in the process of translation from three levels. At the lexical level, literal translation and free translation are adopted for terms of urban planning and constructional engineering, and polysemous words are translated with the techniques of conversion and extension. At the syntactic level, the translator mainly renders complex sentences with addition, division and inversion, and passive sentences with conversion. At the textual level, the translator adopts repetition, substitution and addition to handle cohesive devices in the source text and make the translation more coherent. Finally,it states the gains the translator has achieved as well as the problems to be solved during the translation.
