A Report On The E-C Translation Of Captions In Smart Textiles For Designers

Smart Textiles for Designers: Inventing the Future of Fabrics is a book about designers using technology to create fabrics that are sustainable and ecological friendly,and in a sense,is more about using textile engineering than fashion design.It introduces the latest applications and revolutionary developments of science and technologies in textiles and garment industry,which is filled with detailed illustrations showing the composition of these revolutionary ideas.Pictures have a major impact on conveying information of the whole book,which is of great importance to be researched.This paper is an English to Chinese translation practice report,which examines the captions in Smart Textiles For Designers: Inventing the Future of Fabrics.Both the lexical and syntactic features of the captions are analyzed to ensure the accuracy of the translation.The authors’ finding is that numerous proper nouns are widely used,including names,project names and so on;the compound sentences are used more frequently than simple sentences,especially attributive clauses;passive voice sentences are used more often than active voice sentences.Therefore,the most difficult part of translating the captions lies in how to translate the attributive clauses and passive voice sentences.A Handbook of English Name Translation and A Handbook of Foreign Places Translation are looked up to translate designers’ names and the places’ names respectively;the project names are translated literally within the context of the illustrations.To ensure an objective and concise language style of captions,the author used the pre-posed method and splitting method to translate the attributive clauses.To ensure the translation accepted by target readers,all the passive voice sentences are converted to active voice sentences.
