This paper is a practical report on the translation of folk culture of Shaanxi Guanzhong area.This thesis chooses the second and third parts of The Shaanxi’s Eight Oddities written by Lv Xiangyang,a Shaanxi writer,as its material for translation and study.This work minutely describes the Shaanxi’s Eight Oddities folk culture phenomenon in prose,which is comprehensive,substantial,thought-provoking.Besides,the content is very readable,reflecting the features of localization and colloquialism in lexical,syntactic and textual levels.The author mainly studies the style and expression features of the Guanzhong folk culture texts,and the translation difficulties including the folk culture-loaded words,the Guanzhong Dialect,the Chinese Characters,the parallel sentences,the sentences with idioms and poems,traditional allusions,and classical Chinese showing in the process of Chinese-English translation,and then introduces appropriate measures.In the process of translation practice,the Relevance Theory is firstly stated.Under the guidance of three main principles of Relevance Theory — — cognitive context,ostensive inferential and optimal relevance,the translator analyzes the typical translation difficulties by giving examples.According to the specific context,the translator makes comprehensive use of translation methods including free translation,transliteration with annotation,substitution,omission,literal translation with annotation,amplification,literal translation and interpretation.The translator hopes that this report of translation practice can not only publicize the folk culture of Guanzhong area in Shaanxi Province,but also bring reference to the translation of folk texts.
