| The translation material is excerpted from Boeing’s 2018 Annual Report,i.e.Analysis of Financial Condition and Results of Operations,including the description and data of operating performance,financial situation,revenue,backlog and so on.As the main access for the public to the company’s operating conditions,the annual report is indispensable in the public’s investment judgment.In the context of economic globalization,the amount of multinational corporations is growing day by day.Their annual reports attract a large number of Chinese investors.Thus,the Chinese translation of Boeing’s 2018 Annual Report is of obvious significance.Based on Catford’s translation Shift Theory,this report introduces the textual features of this annual report from lexical,syntactic and textual level,and then explores the translation process under this strategy.The specific combination of translation theory and practice is discussed with lots of examples.The concept of “translation shift” which is put forward by Catford in 1965,focuses on basic units such as words and phrases,and guides translation practice at the micro-level through level and category shift.Among them,level shift refers to lexical and grammatical shift;Category shift,further explaining translation methods from aspects of part of speech,rank and grammar structure,is divided into four types:class shift,unit shift,structure shift and intra-system shift,Annual report is a typical business text,with the characteristics of faithfulness,brevity and accuracy.This translation material contains plenty of technical terms,abbreviations,etc.,as well as passive voice and complex sentences,which,to some extent,makes it difficult to understand and translate the source text.The shift theory is served as a guideline to solve the problems caused by the differences between these two languages,such as the translation of passive voice and post-positive attributive,shift of part-of-speech and the upgrading or downgrading of the source language. |
