Paul Cezanne,as a pioneer of modern art in the 20 th century, explored a new possibility in his paintings. But,fundamentally,it is the restoration of a formal language that has long been lost.Early classical paintings have long hinted at this particular form of order and authenticity. This spirit did not disappear with the development of art, which was perfectly presented in Cezanne’s works.Art is continuous, modern and traditional are not opposite sides.Modern art is neither abandoning tradition nor jumping from tradition.Instead, modern art draws on tradition and advances in a new way.Cezanne is,in a way,the successor and promoter of the classical spirit. On the basis of a large number of contrastive studies on paintings related to the paper, this paper further illustrates how Cezanne’s paintings inherit and develop the classical spirit, how to grasp this classical factor at present, and how to influence his paintings. In the first chapter, the concept, essence, basic attribute and source of classical spirit(represented by poussin,a typical painter of early classical art)are sorted out.The second chapter firstly discusses the possibility of Cezanne’s painting direction from Cezanne’s artistic experience and creation background. Then, from the perspective of other painting concepts and the painter’s personal disposition, this paper analyzes the shaping of the sense of order and authenticity in Cezanne’s paintings.Next,it illustrates how Cezanne’s paintings are constructed in the classical spirit. Finally, the different types of Cezanne’s paintings, especially the mature period of classical formation, are studied to analyze the specific aspects of realizing this appeal. The third chapter mainly expounds the influence of Cezanne’s inheritance of tradition on his later artistic ideas,as well as the enlightenment and thinking he got from Cezanne’s inheritance and development of the classical spirit.
