Nowadays, there is an increasing demand in China for books on how to protect buildings from extreme weather.Translation of the related texts may provide more materials for the relevant research in China, which may offer some references to those people who are concerned about housing maintenance and protection. This translation practice is based on Extreme Weather Hits Home, which mainly aims to guide people to prevent and deal with the destruction of houses caused by extreme weather.Chapters 3 to 8 in this book were chosen as the translation source text. The whole translation process is introduced and typical cases are analyzed in this report. In the translation process, functional equivalence theory is employed to guide this practice, the target text readers’ reflections are stressed and some translation methods are used to achieve equivalence between the original text and its translated version.Case analysis is the focus of this report, typical cases from lexical, syntactic and textual perspectives are selected to discuss how to solve problems encountered in translation practice with application of specific translation methods, like transliteration plus annotation, liberal translation, conversion, inversion etc.Through this translation practice,it can be concluded that readers’ responses in translation of popular science texts are conducive to achieving the functional equivalence between the originals and the translated text. The translator has improved her translation ability and been fully aware of her own shortcomings and deeply realized the importance of professional background knowledge in translation.
