This is a report on the translation of The American Dream-For Men Only? Gender,Immigration, and the Assimilation of Israelis in the United States written by Lilach Lev Ari who is an Israeli scholar. The original text is an academic book on Israeli immigrants in the United States, which mainly analyzes the whole process of Israeli immigration in the United States and their return to Israel from the perspective of gender differences. The translator is responsible for translating the first and second chapters of the book.In the first chapter, the author of the book puts forward some hypotheses related to the theme and conducts a relevant sampling survey. The second chapter focuses on expounding some relevant concepts on gender and immigration. The text typology theory proposed by Katharina Reiss is adopted as the guidance for this translation practice.Based on Reiss’ theory, the translator gives an analysis of the text type of the source text and sets up the principles and objectives of the target text according to Reiss’ description and discussion on informative texts. The general principles for translation are that the translator should put great emphasis on the content and the underlying logic of the source text and the transfer of the information of the original text so that the target text can be as concise and clear as possible and the target readers can understand the information without extra effort. The difficulties for this translation practice lie in the translator’s lack of relevant professional knowledge, the ascertaining of the meaning of some words and the understanding and expression of some complex sentences. In the part of translation report, through a large number of examples, the translator illustrates how, guided by Reiss’ text typology, she analyzes specific problems in specific contexts and adopts flexibly different methods such as semantic extension, conversion of part of speech, amplification, negation, the change of voices from passive into active, division and combination, synthesis etc.at the lexical and syntactical levels to make the translation clear in logic, precise in meaning and easy to understand.Through the translation practice, the translator is impressed by the importance of background and professional knowledge. What is more, the translator has a deeper understanding of Reiss’ text typology and the informative text, and realizes that her ability of translation, especially the ability to deal with complex sentences, needs to be further improved.
