In the context of the acceleration of the globalization process,English is centered as the world’s first international universal language and communication tool and has gradually attracted widespread attention.English courses, especially oral English, have been revalued in secondary vocational schools. But most students, are in a state of "dumb English" and there are many difficulties in their oral English communication. With references of abundant studies in high schools, colleges and universities, the author found that cooperative learning was commonly used in primary and secondary schools but relatively few in secondary vocational schools.Under such circumstances, the author was determined to find out what difficulties indeed existed in students’ oral English ability;whether cooperative learning is an appropriate way to alter the embarrassed situation;if it is,what measures teachers may adopt in everyday teaching practice to achieve a desired result. In short, the author wanted to study the effect of teaching with cooperative learning in the acquisition of oral English by secondary vocational school students. This research uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. It reviews relevant documents at home and abroad, uses questionnaires, tests, and interviews to collect data to confirm the three perspectives. In order to sort out the problems existing in everyday teaching,to test the effects of cooperative learning, and explore measures to carry out cooperative skills in class, firstly, the author chose two classes in the secondary vocational school where she works. She took one as the experimental class and the other as the controlled class. Then,by using three scientific ways of questionnaires, interview, and test, she collected first-hand data and analyzed the results with SPSS.20.Finally,she formulated a complete teaching sample in accordance with certain teaching principles,to demonstrate the effect of applying cooperative learning in oral English teaching in secondary vocational school with measures to daily practice. The analysis showed that the students in the two classes did not have many differences in their oral expression ability before the teaching experiment. After the teaching experiment, the changes and results of the oral English expression ability ofthe experimental class students were significantly higher than those of the controlled class using traditional teaching methods. In addition, from the results of oral English scores in the two classes, the use of cooperative learning teaching has a positive impact on the reduction of students’ oral anxiety, the establishment of students’ self-confidence in learning, the improvement of students’ oral level, the cultivation of cooperative consciousness and interpersonal communication ability. The experimental results also confirm the role played by cooperative learning, which is expected to help teachers optimize teaching mode, set up correct teaching ideas, and improve authenticity and rationality of oral English.Teachers will also change the teaching concept through teaching practice, improve teaching level, and form a teaching style with certain characteristics.Students will have more opportunities to speak English, effectively considering the needs of each student with different speaking skills and conditions. The innovation of this paper is to apply the cooperative learning method to oral English teaching of secondary vocational school students, and to put forward specific solutions to the students’ more prominent oral problems by using cooperative teaching. This study has achieved some academic value but there are some demerits existing. However,it is hoped that the experimental method and experimental process of this research will open a window for the majority of researchers working in secondary vocational schools to improve the results of teaching with cooperative learning in students’ oral English ability and skills.
