| With the development of the Internet,a large number of people tend to visit the news websites for information.Trans-edition,a process of editing the original text by various means before translating it,is an important approach to introduce foreign news in the websites.The studies on news trans-edition aim to improve the quality of the news releases so as to satisfy the needs of the readers from diverse cultural backgrounds.The texts studied in the report are science and technology news from huanqiu.com,covering many fields such as technology,communication,automotive industry and others.Huang Zhonglian proposed the Translation Variation Theory in 1999.Translation variation is an activity conducted by the translator to assimilate relevant information from the source text by means of addition,omission,adaptation,paraphrase,condensation,combination and conversion,the aim of which is to meet the special requirements of the intended readers under specific conditions.The report,based on the author’s translation practice in huanqiu.com,mainly elaborates on the application of the Translation Variation Theory to the science and technology news trans-edition from seven aspects.By selecting some typical examples of each means,the author analyzes the translated texts from several perspectives including translation purpose,language comparison,thinking mode and grammatical pattern.The findings are generalized as follows in the sci-tech news trans-edition: Addition is applied to illustrate the technological terms,evaluate the news and supplement key words to news titles.Omission is used when it comes to the unfamiliar names and commonsense information to the target readers.Adaptation clarifies the logic of the news by confirming to the Chinese way of writing.Paraphrase extracts the main contents by adopting different sentence patterns.Condensation is applied in product descriptions to shorten the length of texts.Combination merges the analyses and comments in the news.Conversion aims to convert the way of expression and improve the readability of translated news.To sum up,addition,omission,and conversion are mostly used in the translation of words and sentences while adaptation,paraphrase,condensation and combination are applied at the paragraph and discourse level.The author considers the seven variation means to be feasible methods of and important references for the sci-tech news transedition.The translated texts are well selected and structured to meet the target readers’ needs,which is conducive to effective spread of information. |
