At present,in China there are still some obvious shortcomings in the training of students’ critical thinking ability in the field of higher education.Under this circumstance, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press introduced a set of Taking Sides in order to strengthen the critical thinking ability of domestic students.Taking Sides is written by James WM Noll,an American educator and educational psychologist. It has fourteen volumes, each of which is divided into ten chapters. In this translation practice, the third chapter of volume 2——Taking Sides:Education was selected for translation. This chapter discusses whether the democratic classroom is really possible in both positive and negative sides,so as to provide theoretical guidance for the practice of democratic education in America. This article belongs to informative text whose sentence patterns are complex and rigorous. Therefore, the translator adopted Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory as the theoretical framework, and Newmark’s communicative translation and semantic translation as strategies to guide this translation practice. At the same time,at the lexical level, some translation methods such as semantic extension,part-of-speech conversion, semantic selection, and omission were used to deal with difficult words. At the syntactic level, the translator adopted translation methods such as division, linear translation and conversion of sentence unit to solve the differences between English and Chinese sentences. At the cultural level, annotation was used to make up for the differences between Chinese and American cultures. This translation practice has enabled the translator to deepen the understanding of group work.Through teamwork, the translator can carry out translation practice more efficiently. In addition, the translation activity also makes up for the translator’s shortages in the process of dealing with the difficulties of translation practice, and makes the translator easier to handle translation practice in the future.
