A Report On The Translation Of Chapter Ten Of Towards A General Theory Of Translational Action

The source text chosen for the translation practice task is the book Towards a General Theory of Translational Action,written by Katharina Reiss and Hans Vermeer,who are German well-known linguists and translators.And they have written many Skopos-related works.At the same time,they have made contributions to translation studies,especially to the establishment and further research of Skopos theory.In China,this theory has exerted great influence on translation studies.The translation task involves the tenth chapter “Equivalence and adequacy”.According to Newmark’s theory of text typology,this book belongs to an informative text which emphasizes the authenticity,accuracy and standardization of information.And the main function of informative text is to transmit information.In the process of translation,the translator adopts the strategy of communicative translation and semantic translation.At the same time,the translator also adopt translation techniques such as extension of word meaning,part-of-speech conversion,reverse and division translation,cultural annotation,transliteration and so on,so as to strive to achieve the maximum understanding of the meaning of the original text on the basis of following the expression habits of the target language readers at the four levels of lexical,syntax,textual and cultural.Through these two translation strategies,the translator can make them understand the meaning of the original text to the greatest extent on the basis of following the expressive habits of the target language readers.By translating this text,we can not only deepen our own research and understanding of Skopos theory,enhance the relevant knowledge of translation theory,but also deeply understand the process of translation and help improve our translation level.At the same time,the translation results are valuable for English learners,they can share and learn from this book each other.
