A Study On The Performance Of Allen H.Barr’s Subjectivity From The Perspective Of Chesterman’s Translation Ethics

The advent of “cultural turn” in the 1970 s has been promoting the researches on translation subjects and accordingly translator’s subjectivity has gradually become an important research object existing throughout the translation process,which is not only displayed in translators’ comprehension and translation of the source text but also embodied in those social facets beyond language,like the communication with clients and publishing houses.In addition,The Return to Ethics in Translation Studies in 2001 stirs up more interests in translation ethics.Scholars like Chesterman and Pym focus on the translator’s cultural,social ethics and professional responsibilities under the cross-cultural background.However,studies on translator’s subjectivity from the perspective of translation ethics prove to be inadequate.The Seventh Day witnesses the latest collaboration between Allen H.Barr and Yu Hua.This translated work popular among the Western readers are innovative in plot and distinctive in writing style,which fully shows Allen’s good mastery of both English and Chinese as an American sinologist and his high professional competence as a translator.This thesis,based on a comparative study between the original and the English translations in terms of language feature,writing style and the use of rhetoric devices,analyzes how Allen H.Barr performs his subjectivity in accordance with the five models of Chesterman’s translation ethics.By comparison and analysis at different levels,it is concluded that Allen is deeply affected by the five models of translation ethics and exerts his subjectivity to the largest extent under the five models,which is demonstrated in his unique language competence,aesthetic standards,personal values,cultural awareness and reader awareness in his translation.In conclusion,the author of the thesis hopes that her study will be able to benefit the researches on translator’s subjectivity,especially those conducted under the models of translation ethics.
