A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Here Flows The Honghe River(Chapter 5-6)from The Perspective Of Chesterman’s Models Of Translation Ethics

The development and prosperity of Chinese literature are bound to the thriving of regional and ethnic literature as a whole.Translation of ethnic literature is of crucial significance to the spread of Chinese culture and literature to other countries.Therefore,the translator chooses the literary work Here Flows the Honghe River(Chapter 5-6)as the source text.It comes from the first volume of the Honghe Literature Series,telling the spiritual outlook and lives of people from different ethnic groups in the Honghe prefecture.Guided by Andrew Chesterman’s models of translation ethics,the thesis explores the translation strategies,methods,and techniques of translating ethnic literature.The source text is not only rich in culture-loaded words but also abundant in dialects,colloquial language,jargon,and common sayings.Under the guidance of models of translation ethics,this report analyzes challenges encountered in translating literary works.Based on different translation ethics,specific translation methods and techniques are adopted in line with the challenges:syntactical readjustment,diction,word-for-word translation,addition,paraphrase,literal translation,footnote,and transliteration with interlinear notes.By doing these,an unbiased stand can be achieved so as to attain objective and good translation for the purpose of crosscultural communication.Meanwhile,the translator studies the feasibility of Chesterman’s models of translation ethics in guiding the translation of ethnic literature.Through this translation practice,the translator realized that very word chosen to form the translated text represents the translator’s attitude and values and the translator’s ethics has a direct bearing on the choice of translation methods and techniques.In this way,the translator hopes that possible contributions can be made to the development of ethnic literature and Chinese literature,drawing more attention to ethnic literature.What’s more,the translator hopes this translation report would give enlightenment in translating literary works and in further studies of translation ethics.
