Vocabulary learning is the foundation of learning any language,as is English learning.Mastery of vocabulary directly affects students’ reading and communication skills.According to National English Curriculum Standard(2011 edition)"primary school students should know that words are composed of letters,and they should be able to spell out some simple words according to spelling rules." However,there are many problems such as mechanical memory,word spelling and writing difficulties in learning process.In2000,phonics was introduced in Hong Kong and Taiwan.The phonics is mainly to form a frame between the letters and voice,so that students can more easily spell out words.But in China,there are relatively few full-time elementary schools that teach English by phonics.The author takes two classes in the fifth grade of Jiaming Campus of Liaocheng Dongfang Bilingual Primary School as the research object.The teaching research of phonics is explored,and the application of phonics in primary school English vocabulary teaching is explored in order to make suggestions for primary school in English vocabulary teaching.In the study,three research methods are mainly used,including experimental method,interview method and questionnaire survey method.The writer hopes to answer the following two questions:(1)Can phonics stimulate the interest of primary school students in learning English vocabulary?(2)Can phonics improve on spelling and writing ability of English words in primary school? In order to make the experimental results more accurate,before the experiment was conducted,the real English vocabulary levels of the two classes were investigated.Two methods were mainly used: questionnaire survey and word test.The main purpose was to understand whether the vocabulary levels of the two classes were significantly different.In the process of the experiment,classe1 is chosen as the experimental class.which adopts the phonics method.And establishes a close relationship between classroom performance and students’ feedback,and guides students to learn English words by using phonics independently.Class2 is the control class,which adopts the traditional teaching method.By observing the two classes for a semester,collecting experimental data,combining with interviews of students’ learning situation,combining the learning results of the two classes,and then exploring the impact of different teaching methods on their vocabulary learning ability.The main conclusions are as follows: First,the teaching method of phonics can stimulate students’ interest in vocabulary learning,and make students more willing to learn English words by using spelling rules in vocabulary.Second,through a semester of study,the students in the two classes have made progress,but by contrast,the experimental class has made greater progress.At the same time,it is found that the students in the experimental class are more willing to use the phonics method to learn single words when they encounter unfamiliar words.It is hoped that the research results can provide some ideas and experience for the practical application of phonics teaching.
