Vocabulary learning,as one of the three magic weapons of English learning, plays an important role in the process of English learning.Based on the results of several literature studies, some English teachers often use traditional vocabulary teaching methods. Some students are often confused by the pronunciation and spelling of English words and lack interest in learning English.Phonics systematically studies the pronunciation of letters and letter combinations according to the internal rules between the words "sound" and "form",so as to achieve the teaching goal of "seeing words enables one to read, and hearing sounds enables one to write " and improve students’ interest in English learning.Phonics was first used among the early learning of English children in European and American countries, which produced a better learning effect. In recent years,it has been introduced into China and has been studied and applied by scholars one after another. However, there are relatively few studies that have been applied in actual English classes. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of Phonics and traditional teaching methods on the pronunciation and spelling of words in the English vocabulary teaching of the students in the fourth grade of primary school,as well as the impact on students’ interest in English learning. The main research questions are as follows:(1)Whether Phonics can improve students’ English ability of pronunciation compared with traditional teaching method?(2)Whether Phonics can improve students’ English ability of spelling compared with traditional teaching method?(3)Whether Phonics can improve students’ interest in learning English compared with traditional teaching method? This study explored the problems in vocabulary learning and the influence of Phonics on vocabulary learning through tests and questionnaires. The research objects are 96 students who come from two parallel classes in Grade Four of Tengzhou Experimental Primary School, which are respectively set as an experimental class and a control class. The experimental period lasts for 16 weeks. The experimental class adopts the teaching method of Phonics while the control class adopts traditional vocabulary teaching method. The outcome shows that Phonics is suitable for English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.Compared with traditional teaching method,it can improve students’ pronunciation and spelling ability and enhance their interest in English learning better. Therefore,Phonics is effective for English vocabulary teaching.
