| Vocabulary is one of the most essential elements in language learning.Especially for second language learners,its significance is self-evident.The author once taught English in a rural primary school for three years,and found that a great difficulty for pupils in English learning is to memorize and master vocabulary.However,in the process of vocabulary teaching,teachers neglect teaching students vocabulary teaching methods or the methods they teach are mechanic,which lead to the aggravation of this situation.Therefore,the author consults a large number of Chinese and foreign literature and finds that the very method phonics originating in the United Kingdom and the United States helps to solve the problems encountered by students in vocabulary learning.Phonics,also known as pronunciation teaching or spelling method,refers to the method of teaching words by understanding the pronunciation of letters in them.It mainly teaches the correspondence between the English letters and the sounds of letters.In view of this,this study applies phonics to the English vocabulary teaching of Grade 5 students in a rural primary school to explore the following two issues:1.What is the present situation of vocabulary learning in rural primary school?2.What impacts does phonics have on rural primary school students in English vocabulary learning?The reader reads a large number of literature materials,and bases her study on the theory of Behaviorism and the Constructivist Theory as the theoretical basis.In the essay experimental method,questionnaire survey and other research methods are used.Taking two classes of Grade 5 students of Shan Yang Primary School in Bao Ying County as the experimental subjects,the experimental class(EC)adopts the phonics as the vocabulary teaching method,and the control class(CC)adopts the traditional vocabulary teaching method to carry out the teaching experiment.Before the experiment,the author conducts a pre-test to investigate the current level of rural primary students’ vocabulary learning,and a questionnaire survey is also conducted to the experimental class to figure out their current situation of vocabulary learning.In the course of the experiment,the author presents relevant knowledge in the forms that pupils like to see and hear,so that students can understand the concept of phonics,and on the basis of understanding,a large amount of training on relevant phonological knowledge is carried out,so that students can master the skill of phonics.While on the process of learning,the author strives to maintain students’ interests in this aspect,and ensures that students learn something and gain a sense of achievement in this period.In addition,in the whole teaching process,the author pays attention to the progress of students’ learning,be aware of the weakness of students’ learning through the form of quizzes,and tried to adjust teaching methods to correct the mistakes and difficulties.In this way not only students’ ability to learn vocabulary is improved,but also their enthusiasm and interests are guaranteed.Finally,through the summary of teaching experiment and practice,the author gives her own suggestions and opinions on how to carry out the teaching of phonics in primary school English vocabulary. |
