| The United States Academic Decathlon Competition(USAD)is a comprehensive academic competition for high school students organized by the USAD Association. The competition consists of ten subjects. Each year, the competition has a specific theme, which aims to improve the academic level and leadership of students through challenges such as interdisciplinary and teamwork.Chengdu held the 2019·USAD China from February 15thto 19th,2019.The author conducted a 2-hour consecutive interpreting for the opening ceremony. This report is based on this interpreting practice with Schema Theory as the theoretical framework. It aims to summarize the difficulties and challenges encountered in this interpreting and to propose corresponding interpreting strategies.Based on case analysis, this report finds three difficulties,namely,1)source texts with rich cultural features,2)frequent-occurring contest terminologies,3)disconnected sentences.Guided by the Schema Theory, this report proposes three corresponding improvement strategies:1)accumulating culture-rich bilingual texts for academic contest interpreting,2)balancing between note-taking and short-term memory,3)moderately adjusting speech order and summarizing information. The author expects such a report to provide some reference for the competition interpreting practice, and related research of interpreting. |
