Corpus Linguistics has come to prominence in the study of language use over the past several decades because of its features including effective analysis tools, large language data, and quantitative and qualitative research methods.Corpus Linguistics for Vocabulary, which is the translation material of this report,is the latest one of the series of“Corpus Linguistics Guides” published by Routledge. This book mainly talks about how to conduct corpus-based research to address some specific issues in the area of vocabulary study.Corpus Linguistics for Vocabulary is expected to be a practical guide for those researchers(i.e.students and teachers)with little or no experience who are interested in the empirical study of language use with the corpus techniques. The report discusses the difficulties and translation strategies that the translator applied in the translation of Corpus Linguistics for Vocabulary based on Adaptation Theory, raised by Jef Verschueren in 1987.According to Adaptation Theory, language has three properties including variability, negotiability, and adaptability.Besides, the theory emphasizes that translation activity is actually a flexible choice-making process of language use which is essentially a process of dynamic adaptation. As a result, based on Adaptation Theory, the report put forward two translation principles: firstly, the target text should conform to the structural rules and conventions of Chinese academic language;secondly, the adaptability of target text can be achieved by applying flexible translation strategies such as conversion, amplification, division, and employment of parenthesis to solve the problems in the translation including long complex sentences, nominalization, and passive structure. Finally, the report summarizes the problems remaining to be solved and gives some suggestions for the translation especially for the Long complex sentences which need to adopt a variety of translation strategies flexibly for the accuracy and fluency of the translation. It is expected that the report would provide some reference for EN-CN translation of academic discourse.
