| Khaled Hosseini published three novels,The Kite Runner,A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the mountains echoed. All these novels are based on Afghanistan, focusing on joys and sorrows of Afghans, known as The Afghan Trilogy. As an Afghan writer who immigrated to the United States,Hosseini was impacted by both eastern and western cultures, which were different with each other in terms of ideology, religion, and politics. The special dual cultural identity makes him a link and a communicator between the United States and Afghanistan."Home" is an important theme in Hosseini’s novels. All of his stories are set in Afghanistan, writing about the loss of Afghans in the war, their joys and sorrows, depicting the history, customs and social customs of Afghanistan, which is his look back on his childhood and his memory of his home,he pays attention to the barren and collapsed spiritual homeland, revealing the value distortion and human alienation under the national persecution and gender discrimination. The cross-cultural and cross-national environment prompted him to think about racial conflict, religious conflict, cultural estrangement, ideological differences, political differences, and so on.This thesis selects Khaled Hosseini’s Afghan Trilogy The Kite Runner,A Thousand Splendid Suns and And the mountains echoed as the main research objects, combined with the background research on Afghanistan, and uses the contemporary space theory to analyze and interpret the "homeland" in Hosseini’s works. From the perspective of "first space",this thesis firstly divides the material home in Hosseini’s works into three levels: family, city and country and made a concrete analysis of these three levels. Then focus on the "second space"-Afghanistan’s barren spiritual home, the collapse of the spiritual world, exposed the ethnic persecution, gender discrimination and other alienation of the relationship between people. Then it discusses the existence and significance of "third space" in Hosseini’s works. As a discourse field of different thoughts, different cultural conflicts, integration and "negotiation",the third space provides a certain possibility for building a common homeland of human beings acrossnational boundaries, races and nations, which has its practical significance in today’s complex globalization context. |
