Educational economics has undergone significant development in the past forty years in China;however,there is still room for its advancement compared with international frontier research.In this circumstance,the translation of educational economics literature from English to Chinese is of necessity for domestic researchers in this field who are not proficient enough in English reading.Based upon the requirements of the task entrusting party and the characteristics of the source text “Intergenerational Education Mobility and the Level of Development”,an academic paper on educational economics published in Volume116 of European Economic Review in July 2019,the report author chose Newmark’s(1981)Communicative Translation Theory,which centers on target readers,as the theoretical underpinning.Guided by this theory,the report discusses the major translation strategies employed during the fulfillment of the task.Specifically,it is composed of six chapters.The first chapter introduces the background of the task,discusses its significance and presents the organization of the report.The second chapter provides a description of the source text,including introductions to its authors,structure and major ideas,and linguistic features.The third chapter describes the translation process.As the theoretical underpinning of the report,the fourth chapter presents the background and major arguments of Communicative Translation Theory and makes a discussion of its applicability to the task.As the main body of the report,the fifth chapter systematically discusses the translation strategies employed in dealing with the task.On the lexical level,the strategies adopted are mainly amplification,omission and word-class conversion.On the syntactic level,the strategies employed are mainly division,restructuring and voice conversion.On the textual level,the strategies used are mainly rewriting and cohesive-device conversion.As the conclusion of the report,the last chapter summarizes the translation strategies,points out difficulties encountered and solutions adopted,and makes reflections on the report author’s personal pains and gains from the translation task.
