As the rural-urban gap is broadening in China, the difference in education between rural and urban areas has drawn attention of many researchers concerned. This report then makes an attempt to translate the main part of the paper Examinations and Educational Opportunity in China: Mobility and Bottlenecks for the Rural Poor published in Oxford Review of Education from English into Chinese as an effort to promote the educational exchanges between China and foreign countries.The paper of around 13,000 English words offers an overview of the evolution of high school and college entrance examination systems in China, and then focuses on how these systems shape opportunities for the rural poor with special attention to social selection in exam taking and outcomes, and to the role of examinations in shaping subsequent educational opportunities.The source text belongs to the informative text where communicative translation is applied. In the process of translation, the author makes use of the translation tools of printed dictionaries, electronic dictionaries, translation software, online translation websites and search engines. Under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory and correlative translation theory, the author also employs translation strategies of source language improvement(SL improvement) and source language respect(SL respect) according to different cases. In translating technical terms and abstract words, the author conforms to SL improvement and personal names, SL respect. To translate sentences in the passive voice or with inanimate subjects, the analysis of the sentence structure is a must before translating on the basis of SL improvement.
