A Report On E-C Translation Of Adaptations Of Coastal Cities To Global Warming,Sea Level Rise,Climate Change And Endemic Hazards(Excerpt)

Global warming and sea level rising are threatening China’s coastal cities with ocean flooding;therefore,it is indispensable for China to strengthen its coastal defenses.Under this background,the English text of this translation practice report is selected by the translator from Adaptations of Coastal Cities to Global Warming,Sea Level Rise,Climate Change and Endemic Hazards.This is a treatise on the Marine engineering technology.The translator has studied and analyzed the characteristics of the Marine engineering technological text,mainly including a large number of technical terms,prepositional phrases,clauses and passive voice.In the process of translation,the translator understands the differences--in word order,voice and structure between Chinese and English and transmits information objectively according to the culture and pragmatic methods of the target language.The translation report consists of four chapters:the first chapter is the description of the translation task,the background and characteristics of the source text as well as the significance of the translation task.The second chapter describes the process of translation,including three parts:preparation for translation task,during translation and post-translation.The translator selects typical cases from the translated version for analysis in the third chapter.On the translation of terms and vocabularies,the translator adopts literal translation and free translation,addition and omission,and conversion methods to explore and translate.On the translation of sentences,the translator correctly analyzes the sentence structure and voice according to the characteristics of each sentence,as well as carefully understands the logical relations of sentences at all levels,and then use the translation methods flexibly to translate appropriately and scientifically.Chapter four is a conclusion of the translation practice.The translator achieves a deeper understanding on the translation of scientific and technical text through the completion of the translation practice report.Combining with the translation theories that has learned,the translator has made a conclusion on the translation methods of the Marine engineering and technological texts in the hope of providing some references for other translators of such texts.
