Oil and natural gas are widely used. They bring convenience to our life and provide fuel for industrial production.Due to strong fluidity,it is not easy for oil and gas to be transported and stored. Therefore, they should be compressed during transportation and application. The compressor, the fluid machinery that increases the gas pressure, plays an important role in this process.By translating the compression technology text, the translator can obtain systematic knowledge of compressor structure and working principle, and comprehend the application and development of compression technology. The translation not only helps target readers get acquainted with the achievements of compression machinery in western countries, but also promotes the development of compression technology in China and provides an important reference for the application and improvement of compressors. The source text is excerpted from the book titled Compression Machinery for Oil and Gas.Based on the analysis of features of the source text, the translation task is carried out under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida’s functional equivalence theory to achieve functional equivalence between the source language and the target language as much as possible. The report is divided into four chapters.Chapter 1 introduces the source text, analyzes the text features and states the significance of translation. In Chapter 2,various preparations in the translation process and how to control the quality of translation are introduced.Chapter 3 is the key chapter, which analyzes cases from lexical, syntactic and discourse levels.Chapter 4 summarizes the whole translation report and gives a brief overview of the experience and shortcomings. It is found that the translation of scientific and technical texts can be guided by the functional equivalence theory. However,a single translation method cannot completely solve all problems in the translation process. Therefore,it is necessary to integrate multiple translation methods to improve the quality of translation. In addition, the translator summarizes the experience of this translation and puts forward suggestions for improvement, hoping to provide references and enlightenment for the translation of scientific and technical texts.
