| This is a Chinese to English translation report on the translation of Chapter 5,Part 7"The Construction of Water and Ecological Environment" in the book Water and Ecological Environment written by Liu Shukun,a Chinese water conservancy expert.This translation report is based on the excerpt from Water and Ecological Environment as the source text,guided by Halliday and Hasan’s textual cohesion theory.Based the translation practice,this report analyzes and studies the application of textual cohesion theory in the practice of Chinese-English translation of informative texts.This report also reviews and summarizes the whole process of the translation practice,by briefly introducing the related background of the translation materials,and presenting the application of the grammatical cohesion and the lexical cohesion in the translation text through the analysis of the translation examples.There are mainly three translation difficulties in this project.Foremost,some conjunction words,repetitive speeches and proper nouns are difficult to translate.Second,some long and complicated sentences and sentences with no subject are difficult to translate to some extent.Finally,due to cultural differences,some expressions with typical Chinese characteristics are hard to be fully translated.In the procedure of translation,the four grammatical cohesion devices are used which are respectively reference,substitution,ellipsis and conjunction.Also,the two lexical cohesion devices of reiteration and collocation are also used in the translation.These devices are used to be faithful to the source text,to appeal to the target readers and to increase the readability of the target text.Based on this,it is concluded that the coherence and smoothness of the translated text should be achieved through the context and the translation strategiesCombined with the specific textual cohesion devices,this report studies the differences of the devices in Chinese-English translation through the analysis and comparison of the original text and the target text.There are three findings in this translation report.First,the application value of the discourse cohesion theory of Chinese-English informative text translation is further improved.Second,the translation quality of the target text is getting better by using different translation methods under the guidance of the cohesion theory Finally,it can provide practical reference and experience to other translators while translating similar informative text. |
