| The Long Song is one of the best-selling novels written by the contemporary British novelist Andrea Levy. With the approach of flashback, the novel tells the story which took place in Amity,a Jamaican sugar plantation, before the abolition of slaveryThis report is based on the author’s translation practice on Chapters Two to Four of The Long Song, which mainly describes the story of the protagonist—July,a slave, from her birth to her being taken away by Caroline, the slave owner.Guided by the theory of Eco-translatology,the author adopts the method of "three-dimensional transformation",going deep into the source text and adapting to its translational eco-environment first, and then giving full play to the translator’s subjectivity to select the target text, focusing on the following three-aspect analysis:(1)linguistic transformation, which is mainly reflected in the transformation between hypotaxis and parataxis, static form and dynamic form, active voice and passive voice;(2)cultural transformation, which is mainly reflected in conveying the connotation of linguistic culture, folk culture and social culture;and(3)communicative transformation, which is mainly reflected in the realization of communicative intention and communicative effect. The report proves that translation is indeed the process of adaptation and selection by the translator. The findings may hopefully help later translators when they do similar translations, and provide some reference for the study and application of the Eco-translatology theoryThe thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the purpose, significance and structure of the report. The second chapter is the task description,in which a brief introduction is given to the ST and its author, followed by a description of the theoretical framework. The third chapter narrates the translation process, including the pre-translating preparation, translating process and post-translating proofreading. The fourth chapter focuses on the case study, the most important part of the report, which reveals how the reporter handling the translation task with the guidance of "three-dimensional transformation".The fifth concludes the thesis with a summary of the translation practice, including major findings and limitations of the paper. |
