A Report On The Translation Of Tomorrow’s Bread From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The source text in the translation report is selected from the first five chapters of Tomorrow’s Bread written by Anna Jane Mayhew.Against the historical background of Urban Redevelopment in America in the 1960s,the novel uses the colloquial language to describe the life changes of Loraylee and her family members as well as people living in Brooklyn,revealing the solid racial conflicts between blacks and whitesThe translator has some difficulties in the translation,including choosing the closest equivalent in Chinese at lexical level,translating the long and difficult sentences,and reproducing the personalized and colloquial language style.According to Nida’s functional equivalence theory,translation is not merely the conversion of linguistic forms between different languages,but more importantly means the reproduction of the source-text meaning and style.Meanwhile,functional equivalence theory highlights that the translation should trigger the same response of target-language readers as that of original readers,to the maximal extent.Based on the language features of the source text and the translation difficulties,the translator adopts different translation methods and skills in the translation to reproduce the content and colloquial style of the source text at lexical,syntactic and stylistic levels from the perspective of functional equivalence theoryThis report consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the basic information of Tomorrow’s Bread and its author,and points out the research significance of this translation practice report.The second chapter describes the translation process.The third chapter briefly introduces Nida’s functional equivalence theory and its feasibility in this translation practice.The fourth chapter discusses the solutions to translation difficulties from the perspective of functional equivalence theory in detail.The last chapter summarizes this translation practice,discusses the limitations of the translation practice,and offers suggestions for future studies on the translation of such novels as Tomorrow’s Bread.
