The unique style and text function of suspense novels pose a new challenge to translators. This translation practice report takes the suspense novel Detour written by Joyce Carol Oates, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature twice,as the research object. The text is full of suspense and mysterious plots. The author combines "truth-seeking" and "utilityattaining"(pre-translation guidance)with "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum based on translator behavior(post-analysis).This paper studies translation strategies of suspense novels and the behavioral dispositions from three aspects:setting environmental atmosphere, shaping characters(linguistic description, psychological description and detailed description)as well as setting suspense, the impact of the translator identity and role on translator behavior, and also explores how to achieve the unity of intratranslation and extra-translation,and the balance between the linguistic "truth-seeking" and social "utility-attaining" of the translator behavior in order to explore the guiding significance and application value of the Translator Behavior Criticism theory to the translation practice of suspense novels.Translators have multiple identities, both as linguistic being and social being,as translators, readers in suspense novel, and as women who witness and sympathize with the heroine’s fate. How do multiple roles and identities affect the translator behavior?Traditional translation criticism is a static analysis based on comparison between source language and target language, lacking a dynamic and human-centered evaluation. The analysis divorced from the social background can’t give a scientific and comprehensive explanation of special translation phenomena. This translation practice report consists of five parts:The first part introduces the writing style of Joyce Carol Oates and her suspense novel Detour; The second part briefly reviews the process of translation step by step; The third part elaborates the theoretical basis of translation report; The fourth part analyzes and summarizes translation methods and strategies adopted in this translation process to show the style of suspense works from perspective of three elements of novel based on the theory of Translator Behavior Criticism, and analyzes them with specific cases; The fifth part summarizes and reflects on this translation practice and carries out posttranslation evaluation in combination with the "Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum, and obtains the general rules of suspense novels’ translation. On the one hand, this translation practice report aims to spread the Oates’ style polishing of details and the translation of suspense novels with keen insight into human social psychology to the Chinese readers of suspense novels;on the other hand,it provides a dynamic, humanistic and social research dimension for the Chinese translation of western suspense novels, with a view to finding regularly on the basis of practice, improving the practical ability of suspense novels translation and the effectiveness of translation criticism. The report found that translators are required to maintain the balance between "truth-seeking" and "utilityattaining" as much as possible in the process of translation.Through the investigation of the"Truth-seeking-Utility-attaining" Evaluative Model of Continuum,it is found that the translator’s behavior tendency in translation, especially from the perspective of the three elements of the novel,is mostly "semi-truth-seeking" and "semi-utility-attaining",which basically achieves the balance. This also shows from the other side that, based on the unique text style of the suspense novel, the translator should not only seek the truth of the image in the original text, but also make the translation easy to understand and pragmatic to the readers of suspense novels, thus providing new train of thought and methods for the translation of suspense novels. |
