From the perspective of Liu Miqing’s style theory, this thesis attempts to explore the stylistic transference of two Chinese versions of The Mayor of Casterbridge written by Thomas Hardy. As linguistic style is the fundamental level of style, this paper conducts a detailed analysis of linguistic style markers—stylistic formal markers, and studies how these stylistic features can be transferred with the reproduction of original flavor on different linguistic levels.Stylistic formal markers are classified into six categories:phonological markers, register markers, lexical markers, syntactic markers, textual markers, and rhetorical markers.Through comparison and analysis of two versions translated respectively by Zhang Ling&Zhang Yang and Han Shiheng, the author finds that Zhang’s translation is very successful in transferring the linguistic features, especially at lexical, syntactic and rhetorical levels. In the context of having a thorough comprehension of the original,Zhang Ling and Zhang Yang usually resort to corresponding methods, which are employed to imitate the source language style,or recasting methods in the aim of recreating the stylistic meaning,so the specific linguistic markers are carefully preserved and the linguistic style is transferred to the uttermost.By comparison with Zhang’s version,it seems that Han Shiheng doesn’t pay much attention to the phonological, syntactic and some other linguistic features of the original.Though the translator exerts much effort on conveying the meaning of the text, the style of the original is damaged to some extent due to the neglect of stylistic meaning implied by formal markers.By the above investigation, this thesis puts forward that in the process of stylistic transference, the translators should place an emphasis on stylistic formal markers and thus lay the essential foundation for the stylistic transference of literary works.
