Style plays a very important role in literary works, and it has been regarded as something unknowable and imaginary for a long time. In the field of translation theory, there are arguments on whether style can be translated or not. This thesis, based on Liu Miqing's Stylistic Translation Theory, has an exploration on the stylistic transference of some characters' speech in Yang Xianyi's version of Hong Lou Meng.In Introduction, the thesis firstly defines what style is and introduces the scholarly definitions of style. Chapter one focuses on Liu Miqing's Stylistic Translation Theory. According to his theory, style can be realized by its formal and non-formal markers. Formal markers consist of six categories: phonological markers, register markers, lexical markers, textual markers, syntactic markers and rhetorical markers. Those formal stylistic markers help us to realize the style of the ST. However, it's not enough to realize the ST style solely by formal stylistic markers. There are "non-formal factors" such as spirit, charm and vigor, which is also an important element to form style. Those factors we call them non-formal stylistic markers which have the feature of integrity, openness, compatibility and peculiarity.Chapter two explores translatability and translation methods of style. According to Liu's theory, style can be realized by stylistic markers, and most of the stylistic markers can be transferred, for example, register markers, lexical markers and most of the rhetorical markers are intertranslatable between English and Chinese. The representation of non-formal markers in English and Chinese are generally corresponding to each other, hence the translatability of style is guaranteed. There are three stylistic translation methods: corresponding (imitation), reconstruction (reconstruction the style in the TT) and generalizing or decoloring(maintaining the connotative meaning while abandoning the stylistic meaning).Chapter three investigates the general features of characters' speech in Hong Lou Meng. Different characters in Hong Lou Meng have their idiosyncratic speech. Speech also helps to create a character.Chapter four analyzes the style of some characters' speech from three aspects:...
