People with mild intellectual disability are a special group in society.Due to the defects of physiological functions,their psychological cognitive ability,language expression ability and interpersonal skills are worse than those of ordinary people,and they are greatly hindered in the process of social adaptation and integration.In addition,there has long been a public prejudice against people with mild intellectual disability as incapable and unable to survive independently in society.The labels attached to people with mild intellectual disability are a huge barrier to their employment,leaving them excluded from the job market.Therefore,it is urgent and necessary to take the employment ability of people with mild intellectual disability as the research subject.From the perspective of empowerment theory,this paper adopts mixed research methods to investigate the employment ability and social work intervention of people with mild intellectual disability in S employment assistance base in Shanghai.Specifically,the ways of collecting the required information involve questionnaire investigation,participatory observation and semi-structured interviews with a total of twelve people including staff,people with mild intellectual disability and their parents of S employment assistance base.Based on the collected data,this paper objectively presents the employment situation of people with mild intellectual disability,and analyses the influencing factors of employment problem.Besides,combining the feasibility and advantages of intervention of social work,this paper explores how to use group work methods to improving the employment ability of people with mild intellectual disability under the guidance of empowerment theory.The study has found that,first of all,the insufficiency of employment ability of people with mild intellectual disability is a prominent problem,which is affected by multiple factors and requires the intervention of social work.Meanwhile,the employment service for people with mild intellectual disability under the guidance of empowerment theory can take fully into account the particularity of this group,which has its own uniqueness and advantages.Secondly,the group work of improving the employment ability of people with mild intellectual disability achieves certain results.At the individual level,people with mild intellectual disability have enhanced their awareness of employment and increased their confidence,while learning interview skills and interpersonal skills.At interpersonal level,peer support network has been set up and group has formed an energy of mutual support between team members.At environment level,people with mild intellectual disability become more involved in social participation and interaction,which has met their requirements.Furthermore,we should pay more attention to the particularity of this group in the process of providing employment service for people with mild intellectual disability.Finally,it is a long process to improve the employment ability of people with mild intellectual disability,which should be required comprehensive application of social work methods and promoted from individual level,family level and social level at the same time.Thus,we could help people with mild intellectual disability achieve effective and continuous improvement of employment ability and realize the employment.
