The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel on meat quality, antioxidant capacity and immune function in lamb.Twenty healthy weaned Duhan crossbreeding female lambs with average weight of 35.5(±1.5)kg and similar age(4-4.5 months)were randomly divided into two group with 10 lambs in each group. The control treatment was fed with basal diet, while the experimental treatment was fed with basal diet+40mg/kg of essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel. The experiment was lasted 75 days, including 15 days of pre-feeding period and 60 days of sampling and data collecting period. This study includes three experiments, and the results are as follows:1.Effect of essential oil from Allium Mongolicum Regel on mutton quality and slaughter performance:(1)GR value and eye muscle area were increased significantly(P<0.05)in the experimental treatment compared with the control treatment, and slaughter rate and back fat thickness were increased statistically however the difference was not significant(P>0.05).(2)p H value and meat yellowness were increased significantly(P<0.05)with the experimental treatment, while water loss rate was decreased significantly(P<0.05).(3)Crude protein in the longissimus dorsi muscle was higher in the experimental group than in the control group(P>0.05).(4)Total amino acids in the longissimus dorsi muscles and the content of essential amino acids were increased significantly in the experimental group(P<0.05).Therefore,feeding essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel to mutton sheep might improve slaughter performance and mutton quality.2.Effect of essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel on antioxidation capacity in mutton sheep:(1)Content of T-SOD in serum was increased significantly on the 30 th day by the experimental group(P<0.05).(2)Content of MDA in serum was On the 60 th day decreased significantly by the experimental group(P<0.05),whereas there was no changes in content of MDA in the longissimus dorsi muscles with the treatments(P>0.05).(3)Content of GSH-Px in serum was tended to increase on the 60 th day by the experimental group(P=0.0662),and content of GSH-Px in the longissimus dorsi muscles was increased significantly in the experimental group(P<0.05).Therefore,feeding essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel to mutton sheep could improve the antioxidant capacity of mutton sheep.3.Effect of essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel on immune function of mutton sheep:(1)Ig G content increased significantly in the experimental group on the15 th and 60 th day compared with the control group(P<0.05).(2)Ig A content was increased significantly on the 45 th day by the experimental group(P<0.05).(3)Ig M content was increased significantly on the 15 th,30th,45 th and 60 th days by the experimental group(P<0.05).(4)Content of IL-2 was increased significantly on the 45 th and 60 th days by the experimental group(P<0.05).(5)Content of IL-6 was increased significantly on the 60 th day in the experimental group(P<0.05).(6)IFN-γ content was increased significantly on the 45 th day(P<0.05)by the experimental group. Therefore, feeding essential oil from Allium Mongolicum regel to mutton sheep might improve the immune function of mutton sheep.
