Paralysis induced by accidents, aging, arthritis,Intervertebral Disc Degeneration(IVDD)are the most common causes in dogs and cats.At present, surgery, steroids and anti-inflammatory medication are the main treatment methods for paralysis in clinical practice. In this study, the applications of veterinary acupuncture(VA)in the treatment of paralyzed dogs and cats in numerous veterinary hospitals are reviewed, the background of the paralyzed patients that associated with the causes of paralysis are analyzed, the curative result of VA for paralysis are studied, and the effectiveness of the “7 Keys Points for Paralysis” in clinical trials are proved to lay firm foundation of VA in the treatment of paralysis.Firstly,a total number of 80 copies of questionnaires were launched and 73 copies of valid questionnaires were returned, with an effective rate of 91.3%.The survey covered veterinary hospitals in different provinces, including Beijing,Shanghai,Tianjin,Shenzhen,Inner Mongolia,Sichuan,Jiangsu,Liaoning,Hebei,Shandong,Guangxi and Guangdong. The participants of the survey were including veterinary institutions of different scales, including large hospitals of veterinary school, franchising chain group veterinary hospitals, neurological specialty veterinary hospitals and the private veterinary clinics. The result of this survey are as follows:1.The paralyzed male dog patients are accounting for 61% of the gender ratio, while the group of aged female dogs is the smallest group, only accounting for 7%;there is a huge statistic difference between paralyzed dogs patients and feline patients, which are 92% and 8% respectively;the weight of paralyzed dog patients under ≤10 kg and paralyzed cat patients under ≤5 kg are the largest groups which accounting for 63% and 83%;there are 23 different breeds of dogs in this survey;Poodle,Pekingese and Shih Tzu are the top 3 of dog breeds prone to paralysis problem;a large percentage of paralyzed patients are suffering from Intervertebral disc degeneration(IVDD)which accounting for almost half of the total number of the causes of paralysis in dogs and cats in the survey, and the unknown reason or other pathogenic causes such as trauma, accident, arthritis, aging and tumors only accounting for a small percentages of the causes for paralysis in pets.2.Among all the veterinary hospitals in China, the most common diagnostic and examination measures for paralyzed cases were physical inspection and gait analysis,X-Ray and Neurological Examination were equally popular, the application of Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)and CT examination is only accounting for a tiny percentage of 4%,hind limbs paralyzed dogs and cats are accounting for 70% of the total cases, while 29% of the pet patients were totally with 4 limbs paralyzed, and pet patients paralyzed at the front legs were only occupied 1%;67 times of Electroacupuncture(EA),54 times of Dry Needle and 42 times of Aquapuncture had been applied in treatment of paralyzed cases in the survey;only 24% of paralyzed cases received acupuncture treatment directly lay on the flat surface, while the remaining cases all required the application of Robe Frame or Wooden Truss that accounting 24% each.3.The curative rates of VA were high at 95% in the survey;31 cases are improved significantly, and 39 cases are recovered completely. Most of the treatment durations were either above 7 days or above 28 days.4.Among the total of 89 acupoints that are applied in the treatment for paralyzed dogs and cats in this survey, the most frequently use 7 acupoints are derived to form a VA formula as the “7 Key Points for Paralysis”.They are Baihui,Hou-san-li(ST36),Liu-feng,Shen-shu,Huan-tiao(GB30),Hua-tuo-jia-ji and Da-zhui(GV14).This research further proved the curative effect of the VA formula of the “7 Key Points for Paralysis” in the treatment of paralyzed dogs and cats through clinical trials.Paralyzed dogs and cats were divided into groups of Grade III paralysis caused by Arthritis,Grade II paralysis of unknown cause,Grade III paralysis caused by Tendon and Ligament Injury, and III/IV paralyses caused by Intervertebral Disc Disease(IVDD).Clinical treatment results are as follows:1.Treatments is including the application of Electroacupuncture(EA)with frequency of 80-120 Hertz for 15 minutes and Dry Needle for 15 minutes, acupuncture treatment once every 3 days. Each full acupuncture course consists of 5 acupuncture treatments integrating with massage, traction therapy and laser treatment if necessary.2.The application of VA formula of the “7 Key Points for Paralysis” is the main treatment methods. The scores of 10 clinical paralyzed cases are all improved from severe grade IV to grade I or full recovery after 1 to 10 VA treatments within a consecutive month.3.The selection of the “7 Key Points for Paralysis” as the main acupoints in combination with the local acupoints Yang-ling-quan(GB34),Du-bi(ST35a),Xi-ao(ST35b)and Ming-men(GV4)as the supplementary points, have demonstrated significant improvement on the stiffness, edema and inflammation of the knee joints;adding the supplementary acupoints Pang-Guang-Shu(BL28)and Shen-Shu(BL23)on Bladder Meridian have improved the urinary incontinence of neurological suppression induced paralysis;adding the supplementary acupoints Pi-Shu(BL20),Wei-Shu(BL21)and Da-Chang-Shu(BL25)as the supplementary acupoints in healing of gastrointestinal problems caused by the lack of movement of paralysis;adding the supplementary acupoints Tai-chong(LIV3),Wei-zhong(BL40)and Yang-ling-quan(GB34)which can help specially to cure the Tendon and Ligament injury. This study reveals that most of the paralyzed dog breeds in China are Poodles,Pekingese and Shih Tzu;Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)has not been popularly adopted as a diagnostic measure for paralysis;more than 90% of the paralyzed cases are improved significantly after VA treatment;among the 89 acupoints used in the survey, the 7 most frequently used acupoints are derived to form the VA formula for the treatment of paralyzed in dogs and cats.Through clinical trials,it proved that the VA formula of the “7 Key Points for Paralysis” is effective in improving the motor dysfunction of paralyzed dogs and cats.
