In contemporary gardens, rockery making is taking on new life in various forms, whether in contemporary private gardens, public landscape creation or emerging architectural projects. However, the contradictory reality is that rockery making,as a traditional skill,is gradually disappearing. And contemporary researchers can only interpret rockery making from the perspective of outsiders, and the result is nowhere near.Faced with this situation, some organizations and individuals have actively launched the teaching practice of rockery making, most of which use model making as a medium of instruction and have gained some influence.Among them, craftsman Fang Hui has carried out teaching practice for more than ten years. In teaching, using small stone to simulate the operation of rockery making can simulate the real construction to the greatest extent, realize the understanding of design, construction and research, which can be combined with the theory of rockery making, and can better respond o the problem of inheritance of rockery making in Jiangnan gardens.Exploring history shows that it is feasible to effectively inherit rockery making skills through classroom teaching, but learners and teachers need to have certain artistic accomplishment. At the same time, the teaching medium reflects the designer’s understanding of the subject, and exploring the teaching method is also exploring the core of rockery making. This study holds that the image of mountains and the characteristics of natural stones as basic materials are the two core topics in this operation method. When simulating the rockery making,it is necessary to abstract the actual strategy or construction of rockery making. The characteristic of this operation method is to take "the best-looking surface of stone ","the ornamental surface" and "the rock surface of mountain" as the starting point for learners and researchers to understand rockery making. And follow the order from "stone" to "rock surface",then to "mountain" and finally to "mountain garden" to organize the operation content. The first chapter of the thesis is the introduction, which discusses the background of the topic and the research object, reviews the related researches, clarifies the research method and structure, and sorts out the feasibility of teaching rockery making, the core problem of rockery making and the entry point of operation exercises. The second chapter is an overview of the simulating rockery exercises, which summarizes the basic characteristics of the teaching method, briefly describes the objectives, steps and key points of each exercise, and illustrates them with pictures. The third and fourth chapters are exercise analysis, including rock surface overlapping exercise and mountain garden building exercise. The course starts from the understanding of stone, passes through rock surface overlapping to mountain overlapping,to garden building exercise with rockery making as the main landscape, and gradually transits from stone, the basic material of rockery making,to mountains. The content includes a detailed analysis of the exercise content and an analysis of the exercise examples. The fifth chapter, through theoretical and historical research, composes the two key issues of "the characteristics of stone" and "the image of mountain",and discusses what kind of mountain stacking method can be established with reference to these two.The last chapter is the summary and prospect of the aforementioned research.
